Children love dressing up as their favorite superhero or cartoon character on Halloween. The adults have as much fun as the children in their Mafia Halloween Costumes. You could go to a thrift store and pick up an old suit, tie and fedora and you've got a good gangster look started. One of the most popular holidays of the year,
Halloween has been celebrated for centuries. It is a time for parties and festivities and for scaring people. Party stores are ramped up with plenty of costumes to fit your mood.
The day is spent in different ways depending on your culture. Some people spend the day honoring the dead and visiting their graves. Others get dressed up and have big Halloween themed parties with costumes and special foods that look spooky and are fun to make and eat. Children go out trick or treating to see who can get the most candy.
2,000 years ago the Celts celebrated when the ghosts of the departed were believed to return to the earth and cause trouble. The Celtic priests, the Druids, found clarity at this time to make predictions about the future. These predictions were a source of comfort for the people through the hard winters they endured.
When the Romans conquered the Celts the rituals of Halloween changed. The Romans believed that on Halloween they should honor their goddess Pomona who was the goddess of apples. To this day it is thought to be the origin of apple bobbing.
In the early days of America when the Europeans landed they brought their superstitions with them to New England. The Puritans who had no tolerance for such things allowed very little of the traditions to be practiced. The celebrations were limited to dancing, singing and storytelling until the Irish immigrants arrived. They brought the traditions of costumes and trick or treating.
In the 1920's to 1930's Halloween became a time for parades and parties for the community. Today it it said to be a multi-billion dollar event making it the second largest commercial holiday. Carving lanterns is a tradition that came down from the Celts as well, the legend of the Jack-o-lantern. Jack was a drunk and a joker and is said to have tricked the devil into climbing into a tree and then carving a cross on it preventing him from climbing down. Legend has it that he was neither allowed into heaven for his evil deeds nor into hell for tricking the devil so he was given a single ember after his passing to light his way through the cold and dark winters. Originally turnips were used but pumpkins were more plentiful in America.
Halloween has become a night to express you wildest fantasies and create a costume of your own or go to many of the party stores that are open only at this time of year to purchase one. A gangster costume will usually include a pinstriped suit, spats for your shoes and a fancy fedora hat. For the ladies you could dress up like a moll in a flashy Charleston dress and feather headband with lots of makeup. The more exaggerated the better, its all done in good fun. - 39969
