When I was a child a common game in the neighborhood was called "dress up". We would raid our parents closet and put on their clothes to see how funny we could make ourselves look. I had a friend who decided to play this game daily. You couldn't stop her from playing dress up. She would constantly raid her parents closet and just be decked out in their clothing from head to toe. This friend ended up being a world renowned fashion designer. Everyone who knew her expected this to happen too so it was only fitting that she grew up to be this.
My parents on the other hand did not allow us to play dress up with their clothes. In fact they were against Halloween costumes for children altogether. They wanted us to wear what we were supposed to wear and nothing else. So when Halloween rolled around each year we had to figure out everything for ourselves. Some years were harder than others but me and my sister always managed to pull it off. It was probably because of her vast collection of clothing items that we were able to do it so well. Imagine wrapping yourself in belts, scarves, and even bed sheets. We were ghosts one year!
Still, my favorite child costumes were the special ones my parents would help us with. Pretty much every year, we would spend nearly a week making child Halloween costumes as a family. My mom knew how to sew very well, although she did not use the skill very often, and she always outdid herself in making the best child costume whenever we had a costume party to go to. She would also volunteer with the school drama program when we were in the play. I had the honor of going on stage in some of her very best child costumes.
Other times it was fun to improvise on our costume efforts. My sister and I loved to play the war games and such that my parents hated. When we wanted to do this we had to be very secretive about it in order to hide it from the folks. We would get sashes and fake swords and tie them at our belts. We were decked out ninjas running around slaying demons in the neighborhood. This used to be wildly fun for my sister and I. In some ways, these costumes we made for fun were better than the Halloween costumes for children that we bought.
Sneaking around and trying not to get caught is always an exciting thing for a child to do. In retrospect, I think that our parents must have had some sort of idea what we were up to at the time, but they acted none the wiser. Maybe it was just nice for them to see how well we were getting along. Whatever it was, we sure had a lot of fun being cowboys, pirates, ninjas, and knights. - 39969
